Deduplication of contact data (“dedupe”) is simply the identification and removal of duplicate records (usually for an individual or company) from a file or database. This is the most obvious function for matching of contact data, although very often the requirement is for Record Linking rather than removal of duplicates.
By removing duplicates from a mailing file, you reduce wasted spend on duplicate mail and you avoid damaging your brand in the eyes of the recipient. You can also dedupe at (say) family level to avoid mailing several members of the same family with the same message, where one letter will be just as effective. By removing duplicates from your database, you allow your administration to function more efficiently and can make sure that if your customer moves or their other details change, you don’t risk leaving out-of-date details in unseen duplicate records – getting this right is all the more important now, to comply with the new GDPR rules.
